Roe v. Wade: A Dark Anniversary

January 21, 2011 by

Saturday marks the 38th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion. On January 22, 1973, by a 7-to-2 vote, the Supreme Court voted in favor of “Jane Roe” effectively making abortion legal everywhere in the United States. Since 1973, an estimated 53 million babies have been terminated in this country. That’s an average of 1.5 million abortions every year. Every terminated baby represents a son or daughter that never had a chance at life.

Almost Aborted 38th Anniversary

Search for “Roe versus Wade Anniversary” on the web and you’ll find headlines like, “A Time for Celebration…” and “Women’s Heath Celebrates…” Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, the death of 53 million babies shouldn’t be a milestone for anyone to celebrate. And for those celebrating the advancement of “women’s reproductive freedom” or “a women’s right to choose”, this dark anniversary also shines a light on the millions of wounded women among us living with the guilt and sadness of choosing to abort their child.

This weekend, I encourage you to pray for the end of legalized abortion and for all of the would-be mothers and father and their families living with the grief of losing a child. I also call on you to pray for the hearts and minds of those celebrating choice; that they might see the awful emotional toll this legal decision has brought about for women and families in the United States.
