Candace – Survivor #1

Suffering from debilitating stomach cramps, Chris drove herself to the hospital for tests. After receiving two x-rays, several injections, and undergoing hours of being poked and prodded by multiple physicians, the doctors were stumped. Blood and urine samples were taken revealing news that no one expected. Chris was pregnant. Chris wondered how this could be possible; she had just finished her menstrual cycle and had been faithfully taking her birth control pills.

For doctors and hospital staff, the decision was unanimous. Chris would have to come back in two days so they could perform a clinical abortion. The barrage of X-rays and injections Chris had received were not safe for a growing fetus. For the doctors, it was nearly a foregone conclusion that the baby would be born with serious birth defects. Although still in shock, Chris knew she couldn’t have an abortion. Chris’ husband wasn’t working and spent virtually every penny they had on cocaine. She knew that she would be alone during a high risk pregnancy, but she resolved to hand all her worries to God. The months were long and the doctor visits difficult as there were always abnormal and irregular growth indicators. But as she held Candace for the first time, the stress of the previous nine months melted away. Other than having jaundice, her little girl was absolutely a perfect, living miracle. Today Candace is a vibrant thirty year old woman with the same optimism and strength of her mother. Her husband and three beautiful children can’t imagine life without her! We were fortunate to have met with Candace for her survivor portrait session while she was pregnant with her third child!
